How to change D30 pass. side seal?

My buddy's '91 YJ Dana 30 front passenger side axle seal is leaking bad. Where is it located and what do we need to change it?

Re: How to change D30 pass. side seal?

it's located in the tube just outside of the disconnect assy.
you have to remove the wheel/hub/axleshaft, the disconnect cover/fork then coupling and center shaft can be removed.

i hate to say it but this seal is very hard to change, i always use a chrysler special tool.
joeycj5, you don't have to remove the carrier for the passanger side seal on a disconnect 30.

Re: How to change D30 pass. side seal?

Can you elaborate on what are the difficulties? Do we need to remove the hub or just the axle shafts/spindle? Do we need to bother the inner axle? I guess the seal is pressed in from the disconnect housing end. I was thinking of using a long threaded rod with the right size of washers on it to knock the seal out as well as pull the new one in. Would that work?

Re: How to change D30 pass. side seal?

the spindle is not a seperate part from the hub like on a CJ dana 30. all you have to do is remove the caliper and rotor, then the 3 bolts that hold the hub on (they 13mm 12 point) the hub will be rusted and stuck in the knuckle, i spray penetrating fluid where the dust shield, then hit the hub with a hammer to loosen it
i don't take off the outer cotter pin or big 36mm nut, when the hub is free from the knuckle you can pull the axle shaft out with it in one big assembly.

i remove the inner axle shaft because it's in the way of the puller/pusher tool i use for the seal installation. (but it don't have to be removed) a long threaded rod with a couple washers and nuts is similiar to the tool i use.
clean the housing tube and inner shaft really good abd grease the new seal, cause it's easy to damage the new seal when your sliding the inner shaft back in through.

Re: How to change D30 pass. side seal?

OK, I know how to take the hub and inner/outer axle shafts out, I've done it on mine. So once their are out I can knock the seal out from the outer end of the tube towards and into the disconnect housing, is that right? Then to install the new seal I need to pull it back the opposite direction (probably with a slide hammer)from the outside or with a turnbuckle/spreader type of tool from the inside. Am I on the right track here? Oh and 3/4tonYJ, could you give me some dimensions on the tool you're using? Considering that I'm going to use washers or seal installer disks, what diameter do I need to get? (so I can get everything right ahead of time) Thanks.
