I have a friend that has a 258 in his CJ-5, I think it is a 1978. The engine was rebuilt but it backfires a little whenever he gets on it and lets off. I have a timing light and would like to help a fellow Jeeper get his timing right but I would like some suggestions as to where it should be set. I can calculate either both initial and total advance with my light. His engine was rebuilt with stock parts.

I have rebuilt my 258, but not with stock parts. Bigger's better!!!! More power!!!! Should have built an 8 cylinder. O'well live and learn. I just put a new distributor in mine last week and the timing is set a 6 BTDC. I don't know if this will help but it is a place to start. Do a search on this subject. TeamRush has given some very good directions over the last couple of weeks.
6 BTDC is a good starting point , and a timing light is good to set initial timing, but I have always fine tuned engines using the "advance it till it pings ,then back off " method that Team Rush described. Then you can use the light to find out where you actually ended up.
