I'm driving through West Virginia today and my CJ is sputtering sometimes uphill. Soon, the sputtering is consitant and I hear noises coming from carb (I think). Not to much longer and its backfiring regularly and won't go over 40 uphill. I got it towed and now I sit in my hotel room waiting for Monday cause West Virginia doesn't work on sunday. Anyone have a clue?
I also noticed some fluid leaking from the rear axle around the ubolts on the drivers side. The fluid was watery brown and smelled like gear oil. Don't think this is related, but it could be.
So, hope someone has a clue, in case the mechanics don't. One of the tow truck guys backed into my Jeep and pushed in the left front fender. He yanks it back out and goes, "sorry bout that buddy, its all fixed now, I pulled it out." Okay pal, paints fubared and the left marker light is cracked. I told him I'd talk to his boss the next day. Looks like I'm getting some work done for free tomorrow.
the gear oil is probably a bad seal on that side.. is it on the rim also? the suttering.. could be several things.. carb may need a rebuild..ignition module could be bad.. loose plug wire.. dirt in the fuel filter..
jeepgod.. you forget your own lessons!!! could be vapor lock, also check the wires going to the coil a loose conneection on the coil will cause strange problems
lol.. yes i did.. nothing like vapor lock when you are sitting outside of denver for 2 hours putting up with yuppies starin and laughin at me.. while i sit helpless.. waiting for cool down..
Check your choke to make sure it is opening correctly. Take out your plugs and replace them if they are black (carbon). I had this same thing once. I only had to replace the plugs to get it going on the road, but the cause of it was because of the carb so I rebuilt it and has been running fine since.
Could be timing also, with maybe bad plugs also check the intake manifold bolts, may be loose causing the plugs to burn. Backfireing in carb is due to . Too much fuel, missfire, or super heated carbon build up in cylinders. GP'n
Good ideas, one and all... But I think all of you may be looking for tigers when a mouse is the problem...
What he described is classic fuel starvation...
I'd look for a clogged fuel filter, and while I had the fuel line open, I'd check the fuel pump flow...
Sounds like a bad fuel pump or fuel filter...
Good luck to you, no matter what happens...
Aaron.
I agree with TeamRush, had the same thing. A easy way to test is (When the engine is cooled down!!!!!) Take the filter out, empty the thing from the intake (Backflow) replace and try again. This is when you cannot get a new one right away. Otherwise $3 carb cleaner will save you allot of the time, also use it to look for intake leaks!
Good Luck!!

Well, thanks everyone for the help. I finaly made it home.
Two of the plugs were bad. I looked at them after the mechanic pulled them it was the number 2 and 3 cylinders that were bad. He changed the fuel filter and cap and rotor and plug wires for me. He said it could be a bad head that caused the two plugs to go bad. What exactly does this mean?
Once I got going and got a tankfull of premium she drove great. He also suggested getting the carb rebuilt. How difficult is this to do?
I don't know what I wouold do without the knowledge and experience on this board. Thank you so much.
Carb rebuild would depend on what carb you have.
Most of the carbs from the 60's, 70's, and 80's could be rebuilt by Forest Gump...
Did he say what was 'BAD' about the plugs?
Depending on what was wrong with the plugs, it could be a lot of things...
I'm sure the fuel filter and cap and rotor did more for you than anything!!
Glad to see you made it home O.K..
If you have any more questions, feel free to ask! I'm sure some of us can B.S. our way through it! /wwwthreads_images/icons/wink.gif
