Hello again-
I need a stereo console so those blasted thieves don't steal my stereo again. I wanted to see if any of you had experience with the overhead console or the floor mounted one. I like the overhead one, but I wanted to hear some opinions first.
thanks again

I use the center console version for my stereo in my YJ, butbthat overhead set up looks pretty trick, with two pop down lockable compartments for CB and Stereo. you know it sure would be nice if there were no thieves, and your Jeep design could just be built for performance, instead of having to figure out how to keep criminals out of your stuff. I had a couple of custome painted gas cans a freind gave me as a gift, stolen off of my YJ while I was eating dinner, after a run a couple of months ago. I had a pretty tough day in the rocks that day and ended up with a few hundred bucks in damage, but that didnt bother a bit, thats just an occasional element of rock crawlin. But the gas cans, that just pissed me off to no end, and almost wrecked my sweet disposition. back to your question though, I would probably go with the overhead if I already didnt have a center console incorporated into my Roll cage. The only problem I could foresee is that you wont be able to lay your front windshield down, if the console is attached to the windshield frame.

If at first you dont succeed, your replacement will try and try again.
I recently got a CBrack from Doug and am extremely happy with it. I have a small center console that I will lock my cb in when I leave my jeep. A couple of things steered me in the direction of the CBrack...Price,size and ease of installation. I may miss not being able to lower my winshield, but that is one of them things..My center console I got from ebay for $34. It is a full steel box and supposedly a tuffy prototype??? Also, I can lock my winch control switch, pullout stereo and a few other things that normallw would have to go in the glove box...Just my .02 ...seeya...
THe overhead tuffy is great except that you can't lay the windshield down. I really like being able to do that, so if I get a rack with my Rollcage, I'll go CBRack. I have the console, and it is great. All of Tuffy's stuff is well designed and safe.
/wwwthreads_images/icons/smile.gif We built a "console riser" for the new console we bought that bumps the console up to the same height as our ZJ has, and the same dimensions forward and the same dimensions to the auto shift lever. This riser starts out at 8" and is about 26" front to back. We have fitted the B&M floor shifter into the front end of the riser/console so it looks real custom from the side. Anyway, we made this riser out of 10Ga material(about 1/8") so it could be the seat belt anchorage as well. Additionally, we use the riser as the heater duct for the floor heat with an aftermarket heater installed in the back end. If we wanted a secure place to keep stuf, and we did not want to bother with floor heat, the ENTIRE riser cavity would be available, and what we would do is have the console itself bolted to the LID of the cavity....so the riser would weld or bolt to the floor, and have a rear-hinged full-length lid. The riser lid would have a mega-lock on IT, and the console just raises up when the lid is unlocked and opened. It would be hard to tell that the console is even sitting on an "openable" console riser./wwwthreads_images/icons/crazy.gif

I will not knock the Tuffy line. Have their center mounted console between the seats and the great big cargo box that takes up the entire back when the seat is removed. Am seriously considering their glove box too for my TJ.
Tuffy's approach and my approach to the overhead rack for mounting radios etc is different. Tuffy starts with keeping it safe from thieves. Nothing wrong with that at all. My concept is versatility, ease of use and modification, strong and relatively inexpensive. A thief can steal from a CBrack quite easily, but just as easily you can remove radios, GPS, computers etc from the CBrack and store them in the floor mounted Tuffy console. That is exactly what I do.
The design of the Tuffy overhead console keeps the thieves out, but it also makes it more difficult to mount a bunch of stuff and oddly shaped stuff. I have one customer who has a CB radio, cell phone, CD changer, light, speaker, video recorder and switch pannel all mounted to the same CBrack. Two or three have portable computers connected to GPSs, one has a closed circuit TV system with 6 cameras mounted all over the Jeep. The monitor and switches for selecting individual cameras are mounted on the CBrack along with a police loud speaker and siren system and another interrior light. These types of things would be very difficult if not impossable to mount on the Tuffy.
If security is your main concern, then I can highly recommend at least the floor mounted Tuffy boxes. Only reason I can't recommend the overhead rack from Tuffy is because I have not been able to check one out closely. If you want versatility AND security, then I would recommend a floor mounted Tuffy of some kind and a CBrack overhead.
As far as mounting my CB and other valuable electrical pieces...I want them as high as possible! I know for a fact that the factory Jeep radios are waterproof, and thats enough radio for me. My CB and a few other things I want up and out of the water. Similarly, I'll be mounting 4-6 indoor/outdoor boxed speakers to the rollbar and windshield since the factory ones succumed to water and mud intrusion. Basically- if its located above my nose...I doubt I'll put it underwater!
My Jeep is just a leaky submarine in disquise
