I have a 76' CJ5 258 with 69,000 miles on it. In my previous post I asked about engine noise after traveling on the highway (55) and when I slowed down it would tap. I have flushed the engine and put fresh syn. oil back in.
Well today if finally got warm here and the engine is tapping still and runs a little rough. It runs perfect when its cold or on the cool side (maybe a little miss after I get to work on the cooler days. But now I am worried, it sounded like hell today.
Oil pressure on the highway about 40 psi (mechanical gauge)
Temp is running in the middle right were it does normally
Could it be the timing chain streching with the warm weather, Lifters need replacing, pushrods, rocker arms.
Or should I just take it to my local garage and have them look at it. I can't afford to have it down too long.
Don't know if this is your problem or not. I had a continueing problem that was a rather high pitched metal to metal tapping. It was the rocker arm pivots worn our. My 1975 model 258 had aluminum pivots. That gave clearance to the valve train ( should have none on the hydraulic lifters). That made them tap. Easy replacement and can hardly hear the motor run now......
My '88 has a noise that almost never goes away, a tapping noise. It is worst when the engine is cold, almost goes away when it hits 100c (boiling) but is still noticable. I have the I-6 engine with 251,000k on it. Is it time to pull the top off and check it out?
I have had some engine noise lately only after my jeep warms up. Thanks to TeamRush I have finally tracked it down. It turns out it is my distributor. How is your oil pressure at idle? Check this, after driving at highway speed and you hear the noise stop and leave the jeep running, raise the hood and place your hand on your distributor cap to see if you can feel the noise through the distributor.
If that isn't it try taking your belts off and run the jeep a short time to see if the noise goes away.
Take a long screw driver and place it on the top of the engine block, place your ear against the screw driver to listen inside. If the noise is faint try the front, back, and bottom of the engine until it is louder to narrow it down.
Report back with some more information and I will try to help.
Check your exhaust! My tapping noise is directly related to loose exhaust. Sounds like metal on metal, sounds exactly like valve tapping, but it's actually a loose collector..

If a Jeep can't take you there, Think twice about going..
Make sure you put your ear against the handle of the screwdriver and not the blade./wwwthreads_images/icons/wink.gif I actually saw a guy do it!/wwwthreads_images/icons/shocked.gif
Sorry to be late to your post, but I have the same problem with our 83 CJ7 258, a hollow metallic tapping, intermittently, mostly at idle. It will tap several times then run a while w/o doing it. It has done it for a year or more, and seems to run fine otherwise.
An occasional loud tapping, that comes and goes randomly at idle, is often a lifter that has a bad check valve. The parts inside the lifter sometimes move and if there is a worn spot inside, the valve won't seal and the lifter will collapse. The engine will usually run fine while the noise is present. Unfortunately, the head will have to come off to remove/replace the lifters on 6 cylinders. On 4 cylinder AMC/Jeep 2.5Ls, the lifters can be changed without removing the cylinder head, for those out there with these engines.
Hope this helps, good luck!
