From experience (not with a sled tho), I can safely say that that is NOT stupid, holding on would have been stupid. If you're so out of line that you have to bail, by all means, go for it!

Besides, its all fun and painless....till that blasted earth steps in and stops you!

Re: And you thought YOU were crazy--pic

yep, bail!!! It hurts a lot worse when several hundred pounds decides it wants your landing spot. Better to bail and try to put some distance between you and it.....or not junp so high.

Hey Gmoody, your tag line reminded me of a saying I once heard. "It takes a big man to cry and an even bigger man to laugh at him!"

Re: And you thought YOU were crazy--pic

That's pretty typical for Ladd. I would bail too. That sled is about 20 years old (at least) and has absolutely zero suspension. To be honest that really isn't that big a deal. My buddies and I do that crap all the time on our sleds as snow makes for a pretty soft landing. We like to blast up through a cornice at about 30 mph and bail off the back doing a back flip just as the nose breaks through. You can get 15-20 feet off the ground at the peak of the jump. Watch the video "SledNecks 3" or "Powderbound 4" and see some good snowmobile jumping. I'm one of the nuts who rides with the Powderbound crew.

I was actually going to post the same response Snowtow did. I'd bail off that old rocket too. Easier on the spine. My sled is a '96, and by todays standards it's suspension is dated. So you can understand where we come from.
