What gears for 33\" tires?

I have a '85 Cj-7 I believe stock. I have put 33' tires on it, and doesn't want to go anywhere fast. I don't do a lot of wheeling and mostly just around town. What gears should I put in it? I have come to my limited conclusion of 4.10 gears. Also is it ok to buy used gears, and how do I know they are 4.10 gears? Any pitfalls of putting them in? I have overhauled a Jeep axle before, taking everything out of the axle.

Re: What gears for 33\" tires?

Jon,
You will find 4.10 gears to be just about right. That size will let you go down or up a couple of sizes without having major problems. I am assuming that you have the T5 transmission. 5Th gear overdrive works fine on the fwy.

As for used gears...finding used 4.10's will be tough, because most guys will be like you...replacing their 3.31 or 3.73 for 4.10. You might be lucky but personally, I would buy new, that way you know what you are getting. Just so you know, you will pay about as much for installation as you will for gears...which means you only want to do it once...so buy new ones.

Check out Drivetrain Direct. I bought a full set of gears, front and rear, plus install kit (bearings and misc items) for about $420.
