NP207 on 87-88YJ?

Did the 87-88 Wranglers come with an NP207 transfer case before the NP231? I know that later 88s have 231s, but is the 207 basically the same design? I heard that the 207 is actually weaker. True?

Re: NP207 on 87-88YJ?

The '87's came with the NP207 and yes for some reason it is considered weaker. I'm not too sure why but if it got changed after only 1 year, it must have been for something.

Re: NP207 on 87-88YJ?

the np207 was used in most 87 yj's, although a few later ones came with the 231. 88 and newer all have the the 231. the np 207 was offered from 84 to 87 in all standard tranny cherokees, whether they were four or six cylinder. i have a 207 in my wrangler that i pirated from a cherokee, and have had no troubles with it. my guess would be that the reason that the 87 yj's have this case, is they were there at the time. jeep had a large supply and wanted to use them up. so in they went. at the end of the 87 production year, the cherokee was to get a new case, and they didnt want all these cases to go to waste. as far as strength goes, i have also heard that they are weaker, but i have not had one apart to match up the internals.

Re: NP207 on 87-88YJ?

I also have a NP 231j in my '87 YJ. I was shocked when I realized it, but when I was under the Jeep I looked at the tag and that's what it said. I guess I have a late model '87.

Re: NP207 on 87-88YJ?

I bougt my 87 in feb of 1987 and it had the 231,so it did not matter when they were made but maybe where.Mine was manufactored in Canada.Could this have been the difference? Many times at the parts stores I have been told that certain parts did not come on 87's.rh

Re: NP207 on 87-88YJ?

My 87 had a NP207, but it was replaced by AMC about 6 months after my 87 was purchased. I purchased it in July of 86. And it was replaced in Jan of 87 or Feb, something like that.
It was replaced with the NP231
