Whats it take to put a early CJ5 body on a 76+ CJ5

Just wondering what it takes to put an early 5 body on a late one? I think the late frames are about 2 inches wider. Am i making that up?Is there anyway to get an early on a late or a late on an early??

Sold the CJ... Cant wait for the next time around!

Re: Whats it take to put a early CJ5 body on a 76+ CJ5

well... I found 78 CJ5 behind a body shop today. Some weird brown stuff had eaten through the floor! Imagine that... But the frame looked good. Called the shop owner and he said that it since he bought it in 1978 he has only used it to snow plow his lot and it only has 40,000 miles. He says it runs real good and it has a 4 spd. Humm a 4 spd, must be a t18! I am going to go see him latter in the week and see if he will take $300, maybe $400.

I asked the early body question because i also found a '60 body with very little rust for $350.

A big thanks to everyone who responded to my last post about what a CJ7 was worth. I went to go see it and it turns out that a whole familly of mad red necks put the glass tub on! Had the damn thing holding on there by 3 bolts and some wood blocks.

The tub will fit there, but you will have to use the pedals and such from the newer one. It takes some fabbing here and there, but i should fit like the old body. A buddy in club has a 56 tub on a 78 frame

Jack her up Tim and slam it in first and count the turns of the driveshaft in first gear . If it`s a 6 it will be a stock T18 and chances are that it is the low geared one , most were , if not all in the CJ`s . If it`s a V8 it`s been changed , ONLY the 79 CJ had the option of having the T18 behind the V8 . Go get er Tim !!

Umm, to count the number of turns you need to be able to see both the input shaft and output of the tranny. You also have 6 turns of the input shaft for one turn of the output whether it's the tranny output or transfer case output when in high range (not six turns of the output). If it is the stock four speed it has the 6.32:1 first gear. All of the CJ T18's from '76 to '79 had the granny gear. The earlier ones had the 4:1.
