Cracked cylinder??--304 mechanic guru\'s

Hello all,

I was in the process of breaking down my 304 in the cj for a overhaul when I came across something that looked like a crack in the cylinder,,second from the front ,,drivers side. It's a zig-zag line running top to bottom on the cylinder. I can't visually see a crack {I know that they can be microscopic} but there's varnish or something running along it. ....So Can I pretty much bet this is a cracked cylinder?? .... I'am still an intermediate mechanic and have only seen and had experience with cracked heads. I don't know much about it's history and neither did the guy I bought it from-{jeep wrecker yard.}

Take it into a good machinest and have him look at it. It could just be a fairly deep score.... or like you figure a crack. It may be as simple as reboring the cylinder or as exotic as welding and sleeving. Don't thorw it away until you know your options.

Magnaflux it. You can buy a do it yourself kit from Summitt.
