Tires for the dunes

What's up everyone? Does anyone know what is going to happen when I take my CJ out to the dunes at Pismo. What I mean is, do I need paddles? Everyone keeps telling me I "Have to get paddles"! I can't afford that for an occasional trip to the dunes. I have B.F. Goodrich All-Terrains. I am hoping that if I air down enough we should be able to handle the soft stuff no problem.

Re: Tires for the dunes

I have found that an aired down all terrain works very well in the sand washes, so I imagine the same would go for dunes. Mud tires don't work very well.

Re: Tires for the dunes

If you are an "occasional" duner then just lower way down on the air pressure in what youve got. Ive found that in the volcanic cinders (pretty much like sand) when i air down to about 7-10 psi i get good traction and can run with most sand rails. So i would say dont break you budget, ill probably do better than you think. just my $.02

I beg to differ.. my jeep has seen glamis and the sand dunes very often, and my 31x10.50 dunlop mud rovers when aired down did AWESOME in the sand.. kept up with my dads rail. My current 35x12.50 BFG MT's do just as good... so maybe Im just lucky?

The folks at the New Jersey Beach Buggy Association say the all terrains are fine. Aired down of course. East coast sand different than west coast sand?
