Re: Just want to be sure

under the drivers side motor mount, it will be stamped...401
big letters an inch or so tall right into the casting of the block..

Re: Just want to be sure

I don't know if all the AMC engines did that, but on the 304, 360, 390 and 401's we have in the shop here all have the displacement cast right into the side of the block just as described...

Re: Just want to be sure

ive read on teh AMC list, that decades ago there was an AMC engine block of later design ( thin wall casting) with NO numbers in that bracket area, they were some kind of really desirable police block or something equally as strange, its been awhile since I read that, they were so uncommon I really didnt even digest the info..

basically , all of the recent AMC blocks have that Displacment # cast into the side, and all 401 cranks are purported to be drille dfor a pilot bushing, 360/304 cranks can be found with or WITHOUT a pilot recess..

Re: Just want to be sure

290- 304- 360 cranks are easy to spot, they are cast iron.
No factory crankshafts for those engines...

They say there were forged steel cranks made for the 390 and 401.
That might help if you were junk yard scrounging...
