Sway bar disconnect---help!!

Well, i attempted to remove my anti-sway bar on my 84 Cj-7 so i could consider making some disconnects. Anyway, I removed the bolts holding the short bar pieces on, and I can slide the bottom bar off the connection point on the axle, but I can't get the top part of the short bar off the anti-sway bar. What holds that thing on? I pounded at the bolt with a hammer and managed to screw up the threads, so i quit that. I tried prying, yelling, throwing stuff, and they just won't come off. Any help would be appreciated.

an air chisel works best, but a pickle fork works too.. if you hit the sway bar, not the drag link, you'll get better results.. something about the vibration pops it right out

i had the smae problems with that bolt used some good oil and soaked it a night the bushings are what is holding it and i messed up the threads so i ended up going to the jeep dealship and bought two new ones after i beat the heck out of them.. pickle fork works best but if you do not have one a house fork my work haha good luck

Yeah, those things are hard to get off. They are just like the tie rod ends. The bolt is tapered so when the nut is tightened the bolt is held even tighter. Just like what is mentioned above, I used a tie rod separator (pickle fork) and a sledge hammer. You can also use a tie rod end puller. I borrowed the tools from Autozone. Good luck!

I just kept tapping the flange on the outside of the link back and forth for awhile, and it soon loosened up. If you must beat on the thread end leave the nut on, extending past the end, so you're hammering on the nut, not the stud.

However, I did all this last week (see the $10 swaybar disconnect thread), disconnected it for wheeling on Saturday, and haven't reconnected it yet (30 mile roundtrip to work every day)..... not sure I'm going to bother, with stiff lift springs there's not all that much difference onroad.

Dan, just a thought. A couple of years ago I forgot to reattach my swaybar after wheeling and drove appx. 150 miles home that way.
The CJ did lean a little more but not horribly so. Two days later I removed the swaybar and it's still sitting in my garage. I don't even
notice it any more.

Where you will really notice the lack of a swaybar is if you tow anything. I have a little Packmule I tow sometimes, I would not
want to tow it thru the mtns. without a swaybar. The discos are easy to install, and easy to use.
