rimmer supercharger

Anybody do the Rimmer Supercharger on a YJ 4 or 6 cyl? How hard was it? Is the improved performance worth the installation and money? I'm trying to chase down some info on Rimmer, but can't seem to get to their website and I don't have their phone number. Any input is appreciated

They've changed from Eaton superchargers to Autorotor(? never heard of 'em) for "higher efficency". Awhile back Rimmer changed websites and, from what I'm told, phone #.......it was rumored (and this is just web talk here) that some got burned on some purchases during the reorganization.

I checked out the page.......sounds rather nice. It's a little more expensive than the old rimmer line by about a grand however. It also doesn't mention emissions cert. The old Eaton Rimmer had a CARB exemption......which is a factor in my state unless you drive less then 5000 miles a year. Most TJs are still rather expensive to afford this type mod. 97 TJ with 4 bangers are just now appearing for under $10k. After reviewing a "how much do you have into your rig" thread on this board it's apparent that most here bought their Jeeps for peanuts and spent many many times the purchase price in mods.......the TJ just ups that ante quite a bit. It's easier to do $3-4k of mods when you don't have a payment book. Still......it would be nice.

I don't know about PA, but here in CA that Rimmer supercharger is not smog legal. It never got CARB certified.

FNG...........[img]/wwwthreads_images/icons/frown.gif[/img].....now I've been know to be wrong before (at least once[img]/wwwthreads_images/icons/smile.gif[/img])....but I'm sure that I researched this before and I found that Paxton and the former Rimmer claimed CARB exemption. Since memory is a chemically suspended neuro-state.....it is subject to change....so....
But if you put Paxton Automotive into a search engine.......you'll find that they claim 50 state legality. For some reason the "blowers" don't seem to have the troubles that the turbos have with emissions. I don't think that there is one turbo shop that claims CARB exemption. In any event the current Rimmer site doesn't make a version for the Jeep line.....for some reason Hundai, Diwoo(?).....and Audi (I can't quite understand the association of the three) are Rimmer's blower sets of choice for aftermarket upgrades. None of these models, especially the Hundai and Diawoo, bring a performance image in my mind.

There is a guy in my club with a Rimmer on his YJ. He can't get it smogged. And he's gone and jumped through all the hoops. He even called Rimmer before they did away with their number. They told him that they had applied for CARB certification, but didn't have it. Then they tried to disappear.....

Ya....I caught drift of few people who got boned. Was the guys problem with not meeting the specs.....or getting the smog nazis to put the badge on it with a blower? Here in PA, at least so far, they just plug the car into the computer.....shove the sniffer up the exhaust and run it on a dyno. If it meets the specs.....the badge goes on.....it doesn't matter if you've got a Pratt & Whitney turbine under the hood (only that the computers communicate - that is, when you punch in the VIN into the testing computer and it expects to find an XXXYYY control module..it must find a XXXYYY control module). They only take it up to 15 mph on the dyno. This is only in some counties.....the rest get the standard idle sniffer spec.

That's not the manufacturers fault though. He never claimed it to be 50 state emissions legal, so it's up to the buyer to make the decision if they want to take that risk. If you put a 360 from a 78 Wagoneer into an '87 Wrangler and the air board won't certify it, is it the junkyard's fault for selling you the engine?

Snotow.....the boning that I'm speaking of is not of someone putting the wrong stuff on their rig and blaming the vendor for his/her woes. The boning is when you sell a line of stuff....customized stuff.....expensive customized stuff ........and then all of a sudden pack up shop close your web site....change your phone # and reorganize dealing in a different line of stuff. Some people allegedly did not get their orders filled from the "old" rimmer and were left holding the bag on the deposit (this is just web talk however).
