1985 vette alternator bolt on

Ok according to extreme-jeepin.com, a 1985 corvette alternator rated at 120amps is a total bolt on for a wrangler, even the wires match up, has anyone tired this? can anyone confirm this? if if it does bolt on, do i need to worry about frying anything because i'm going from 63amps to 120amps? they say u can get it from the local auto parts store...

thanks guys

Re: 1985 vette alternator bolt on

If you have a Delco now, it should bolt right on.
Don't worry about 'Frying' anything, if the voltage regulator is working, it is no more dangerous to your vehicle than your old alternator was...

It really is a freebie for power upgrading to a higher output alternator...
--------------------------------

There are a lot of guys that think that you can just change the voltage regulator in a Delco alternator and up the output on it safely... WRONG!!!
The stators and rotors are matched to the voltage regulator.
The higher output alternators even have different cases, for bigger bearings, more ventilation, ect...
--------------------------------

If you have a favorite junk yard that lets you polk around, go look at the GM vehicles, especially the full size cars with power everything.
The amperage of the alternator is stamped in the top of the alternator right behind the top threaded mounting ear.
It will appear as a '63 A' or '94 A', ect...
That stands for 63 Amp and 94 Amp.
--------------------------------

Good luck, and ask if you have any questions...
Aaron.

Just like Aaron said the easiest bolt on one to find are off fullsize GM rwd mid to late 80's. Most of these are 94A. Look for 85-87 caprice sw , olds , pont , buick. Almost all of these will have the old style small case 94A alts.
Not too many vetts setting in yards that they let you go robbing whatever you want in my neck of the woods.

Re: 1985 vette alternator bolt on

TR,
I'd like to swap out my alternator for a higher amperage one when I get my jeep going again in a week. Before I had to park her, I was having problems with the voltage dropping below 12V easlily when I would turn on the wipers and headlights at the same time, not to mention when I turned on my badly wired 100W aux. lights on my bumper. If I went to a local auto parts store what should I ask for? The one's in my town likes to have it pretty specific. AC, no AC, V-Belt, etc... Are there any specifics or should any alternator from any vette work?

Thanks,

If you are looking for a std Delco 94a small case alternator ask for one from a '91 Grand Wagoneer w/AC (and any other accessory they mention).
