Help Me!!!

I just sold my 88 YJ 2 weeks ago to a kid in my town. It had a new motor, tranny transfer, lift, 31" Bfgs...I basically rebuilt the thing and never had any trouble. I bought it with a locker in the rear. I just get a phone call from the kid and his father demanding there money back because the rear end blew...they took it to 2 mechanics and both said everything was shot ($1700 worth of damage)..oh yeah, they drove it to the mechanics..Now they are saying this is my fault for this, I knew about the problem and sold it like that, I just changed the fluid a few weeks back and it was fine, no metal, the right color, and everyting in there looked fine.....what should I do, who knows what the kid was dong to it the 2 weeks he had it. I am having it towed to a local jeep dealer to have looked at and diagnoses...this is a real headache...

Re: Help Me!!!

jimbo
why are you having it towed ? do you have posession of the title now? you are not responsible for the condition of the vehicle anymore. you may feel bad but you know the as-is rule of a used car unless you are a dealer? don't mess with it!
let go of it and leave them alone!
there is nothing they can do to you on this.
they took a risk just as anyone does when purchasing anything used.

Re: Help Me!!!

Ease up on yourself Jimbo, if you sold it to them, they have title, then it's their problem, especially after two weeks! As a fellow jeeper, it would be noble of you to help them out, but the financial responsibility is not yours. I had a similar experience when selling my CJ5 - saw the guy a month later and he informed me the whole front end was shot - hey, it was working when I sold it, and it IS a USED vehicle. I appologized for the inconvenience and said "goodbye"

Keep on Jeepin'

Re: Help Me!!!

Ok here it is in a nutshell tell them that it left the driveway in good working order and not my fault do not offer any help to pay for if he wants your advice give it to him. But do not tow it offer any money back because you do not own it and i would just say they need to cut their losses and go. Tell them to stop bugging you..
Lets put a something similar to help you out you buy a used computer and you get it home you play with it for two weeks and load all kinds of stuff up on it and mess it all up get a virus and the whole thing just crashes..
1)do you give them their money back for something that they messed up?
2)do you fix it for free?
3)was it used?
4)they bought it as is ......
up to you man but i would just tell them i am sorry but their is nothing i can do for you..

Low Riders are for boys who can't get it UP...

Re: Help Me!!!

I wouldn't volunteer to have this jeep towed. What would you expect If you bought a used Jeep. If the front end went out would you contact the seller. One can expect this things when buying used autos. They could have checked the Jeep out before they bought it. Good Luck

Re: Help Me!!!

I agree. In Maine there is a 48 hour rule. You can reverse a sale if not more than 48 hours has passed. For instance, you go to a used car dealership and buy a car on Saturday. On Sunday it breaks. On Monday you can return the car for ALL your money back IF the problem was hidden, pre-existing, etc. You have NO obligation to these people at all and I would refuse to deal with them. After 2 weeks I could trash a jeep so it'd need $1,700 worth of parts as well. Sorry but a used vehicle is used, end of story.

Re: Help Me!!!

Like everyone else said, don't pay for anything...don't have it towed anywhere to have anything looked at. It's their problem, not yours. You have no control over what the kid did with the Jeep in a two week period. I have a buddy who blew the Dana 35 rear out of his BRAND NEW '91 YJ after about 2-3 weeks because he had been doing neutral drops with the thing...you just never know. If you feel that you must do something, help them locate a used replacement for a fraction of the price that they've been quoted.
You bought it, you broke it, buh-bye...

Re: Help Me!!!

My 88 YJ broke down 6hrs. after I bought it. The guy I bought it from paid to have it towed. Even though it was appreciated, it wasn't his resposibility since I had the title and bought it as is. I new this when I purchased it, and even though I had to fork over a paycheck for the repairs, I accepted it. It is now out of your hands. It is their problem now, especially after two weeks.
"As is" means "as is". No implied warranties on sales between individuals unless stated otherwise in writing. The son most likely is inexperienced with the Jeep and blew the rear screwing around and told his dad that it just happened while driving to a friends house. He probably tried to take it off road and ripped the thing to hell. Not your fault. I'm rambling.

Somebody should have told that father LONG AGO that when you are at the hospital and your wife grunts out that little baby, and you look at it and it has a periscope sticking up.....VISUALIZE WRECKED CARS! And blown transmissions....and blown rear ends....and anything that can happen to a vehicle that would NEVER happen if you yourself were driving, no matter how many miles you took it. Tell that guy to "cowboy up"; tell him to pay the bill; and then tell him to start saving up for Junior's next Jeep disaster.

Re: Help Me!!!

On everything I sell, I offer a taillight warrenty. When I cannot see your taillights that the end of the warrenty. If they wanted a warrenty jack the price a couple thousand like dealers so. Even dealers only sell used as " AS IS ONLY" Becareful with the towing, if you tow it could be use as you accepting responsility. Do like the M&M comercial " Blue no live here, go away"
