Front axle spindle nut keeps backing off???

79 CJ-7, stock d-30 front axle, manual hubs. Started getting a popping noise in my steering after a 4" lift and 33's. I found the spindle nut was almost completely off on both sides. I changed the inner and outer bearings on both sides. Replaced everything that came out and snugged the nut back down (not too tight of course). About a week later (today) I checked and I can already wiggle both wheels a little like the nut is backing off again. When I put it back together the first time I scored the last thread on the nut with an awl because I didn't see a lock washer or snap ring or anything to keep it from backing off. Is there supposed to be? Should I be using lock tite? Are the bigger tires causeing this? Is there a bigger problem causing this that I should be looking for?

Thanks for the help
Jeff

Seems to me there is supposed to be a lock washer in there, its the kind that has a tab in a groove and you bend over a part of the washer against the nut.

Re: Front axle spindle nut keeps backing off???

There should be two flat washers that look like they are made of sheet metal. One of these washers goes against the outer bearing then the first nut. The second washer goes on next and then the second nut. After you tighten the second nut you should take a flat head screwdriver or similiar and bend up one of the flat washers edges against the outer nut(this keeps the nut from turning). Be careful when bending the washer so you don't damage the outer edge of your hub. Most repair manuals have an exploded diagram of this. I can send a copy of it if you can't find one.

Re: Front axle spindle nut keeps backing off???

Am I glad I saw this post! I had the same problem over the weekend. The nuts had backed about 1/4" on the drivers side. I checked and re-torqued, but forgot to bend the tab! Thanks guys!
