jeep purchase

I've been looking at a 93 Wrangler (6 cyl. 5 speed hard top)
that is in good shape - everything seems to work good on it - a little rust on the hinges but no rot engine seems strong and tranny shifts smoothly. It has high mileage and I was wondering what I should be looking for in my desision. He wants $3,000. This would be for weekend use - no hard core off-roading or anything.

With ANY kind of reasonable care, the 4.0 will go near 200K. The crank sits on seven main bearings, and if you use the optional big oil filter it holds seven quarts of oil. 3000 dollars isn't much money for a functional Jeep. Better to buy this one than an earlier model and THEN pay for upgrading the engine to a 4.0

Re: jeep purchase

It's got 170k, but I know the guy and he has cared for it - it's highway miles from his daily commute - no off road - he bought a new Wrangler in 2000 to replace this one. I was wondering what I should be looking for as I've only had two jeeps so far - a 97 Cherokee that was a 3 year lease (my wifes, and since it was new I had no problems) and years ago I had a 1960 Willys - my favorite vehicle ever! So I'm not really up on what to look for in a used jeep.

Re: jeep purchase

My 84 CJ just turned over 168k on all the original parts. I got it from the original owner who used it only for daily drive to work. I have put 22k Mi. on it in the past year and besides needing a clutch it is the most reliable vehicle (besides my sami) I have ever owned. I have driven it to the mountains numerous times in the past year and it runs like a champ. It all depends on how much the person before took care of it.

For that low price I would jump all over it. I paid $6500 for mine but I'm sure I could sell it right now for the same amount I have in it.

Re: jeep purchase

Thanks for the reply and encouragement. The guy who I'd be buying it from is the original owner - a mature gentleman that I work with that takes care of everything meticulously. I'm getting a little less concerned about the mileage from the responses I've gotten from my original post.

Re: jeep purchase

Buy the Jeep! You won't have any problems selling it for the same price.
