OT Boat VIN /age determination

How can I know for sure the age of a Boat from teh VIN/ Hul ID number?

IM looking at one here an older ski rig, but Im getting conflicting reports of its age and engine config from teh NADA website, and the owner.

its a 1981 Sea Ray, 195/197 ( according to the owner) with a 228 HP GM305 Mercruiser.

the NADA value book sdont likst a 195/197 year model with any engine other than 260hp (350) mercruiser.

so Ive got a feeling hte vessle isnt actually a 1981, Ive seen dealers glance at the Hull/VIN and say the year is it that obvious? the last 2 digits? last 4 digits?

any help is appreciated, and sorry for the Off topic.

but hey, it is closing on summer time!

Re: OT Boat VIN /age determination

It should be the last 2 digits. They may be followed by a letter. I haven't had a boat for a while but I am pretty sure it is the last 2 digits. Obviously if the last 2 digits are something like "41" we are probably wrong. But I think my '84s VIN ended something like 112W84k.
