Jeeps=Helicopter rule

Hey I just read on another post that

" Jeeps need 2 hours of maintenance for every 1 hour of off-roading" ????????????

I always figured that jeeps were fairly stout no matter what drive train/years they came with just because of the fact that it was a "JEEP" .

Of course a heavy foot and driving characteristics can lead to mechanical failure but Jeeps were pretty much built for off-road right??

Re: Jeeps=Helicopter rule

I've done a lot of work on my Jeep in the 16 years I've owned it, but when you get down to it, of all the vehicles I have owned, it is by far the most durable and most dependable. Even with something broken, it has never left me stranded.

Keep in mind...2 hours of helicopter maint. is 2 hours of wrench time.
2 hours of Jeep maint. is 10 min. wrench time, 1hr. 50 min. having a few beers to celebrate your accomplishment of checking the fluid levels.

Re: Jeeps=Helicopter rule

You do have to wonder if we drove our jeeps like normal point a to point b cars, would we spend so much time under the hood?

You have to pay to play. You can pay in either time or money. The harder you want to play, the more you gotta pay.

Re: Jeeps=Helicopter rule

2 to 1 is low for helicopters. Put them in a harsh environment and the ratio gets bigger quick. 2 to 1 and beat the hell out of it with all the mods we have sounds good. Oh yeah and like smkn said most helicopter mechanics don't factor in beer runs in wrench time.

Take heart; a STEAM LOCOMOTIVE requires an hour in the shop for every three on the tracks. My JEEP Grand Cherokee has 118,000+ miles on it and I DOUBT if I have spent a total of 50 hours on it since it was new. It's probably more like 40. Now the CJ is a completely different story, even though our CJ is strictly snow and pavement, no rockola. Some crop duster friends of ours had a line of Stearmans for YEARS, and then they added an egg beater. They COULD NOT BELIEVE the maintenance and the COST of running that Jet Ranger....heh heh....it was like $350 per hour and that was in the 80's.

Re: Jeeps=Helicopter rule

yep.. but like with anything mechanical.. a jeep is great for off road.. for todays society "off road".. now.. what my jeep sees.. well.. is slighty more harsh.. and what is in my jeep isnt normal jeep equipment.. so even after a good outting and nothing breaking.. i still have to do routine maintanence on it.. check fluids.. repack bearings.. oil change.. beer runs.. and of course a garden hose off... change out the tires... sh!t just unpacking it can take 15 minutes..
