What\'s a used axle worth?

Ok..I found this place near me that handles only salvaged 4x4's. I called and asked them about a back seat and the guy started in about a set of axles he has. It is a Dana 20 rear out of a mid 80's CJ and the Dana 30 front. The rear has sommers brothers one piece axles in it with 4:10 gears and is complete from hub to hub. The front *he didn't say if it had the same gear ratio but I bet it does* is just the shell and the inner pumpkin. The breaks and axles had been pulled off. I think he said he would take around 650 for both. Is it worth it??? I should be able to use my front axle shafts and other brake stuff. They should just bolt right in provided that nothing is wrong with them.

Re: What\'s a used axle worth?

I just purchased a 1980 Dana 30 complete including stainless steel brakelines for $125 so I can upgrade to disks, but I know that was a really good deal, I plan on swapping out the drums and probably could resell for $200. But to me the spare parts are more valuable. The price is a little steep, see if he will take $400. That seems more fair.

Re: What\'s a used axle worth?

way too high
btw a dana 20 is a transfer case, an amc model 20 is a rear axle commonly found in Jeep Cjs, and full sized Jeeps.

I wouldnt pay over $100 each for any axle unless it was usable right then, from a salvage yard they wont be, they need bearings brake parts, seals, fron axles will also need balljoints

check them carefully for bending also

the 1pc rear axle kits are like $300

No, it's not worth it, even with the 1 piece kit, they should cost $350 for both, tops.

If it has the 1 piece in it, jack it up and see if it has a locker. Turn one wheel and listen for a clicking (racheting) in the diff.
