Got a new stick welder today

OK...It isn't new but it is new to me and it was free. Lincoln 230v single phase. It is supposed to be 225 amps(plenty for backyard repairs) and all it needs is new welding cables. I had the opurtunity to pick it up last summer but had no 220 outlets outside my house. With any luck I will be able to get an electrician friend of mine to run an outlet to the tool shed in my yard this weekend. Since it appears that I will be swinging in the 5.0 in my driveway instead of in my shop at work I figured a welder for free was un-beatable.

Slowly everything comes together.

Wow Jimmy,

You can't beat free can you? I personally love stick welders especially for fabricating work. Nice for skid plates/crossmembers, bumper fabrication etc. I'd love to get my hands on a nice inverter say about 130-150 amps. The 90 amp ones are not too expensive, but anything over that amperage and the price shoots up!

Re: Got a new stick welder today

Once I pick up some new cables and run the 220 line I'll be in it for a couple of bucks. The main reason I got it for nothing was because it is from like 1975 and the person who gave it to me hasn't used it in several years. It does work however(I tested it with the cables that were on there and got a little jolt).

Re: Got a new stick welder today

My neighbor has got an antique oil filled Oxford welder. The bloody thing weighs a ton, but it does the job. He got it for next to nothing from a car boot sale. It is amazing what you can find cheap at those car boot sales over here. I normally borrow an inverter from one of my old employers when I need to weld anything. These are soooo smooooth to weld with and you got the advantage of being able to weld TIG as well if you've got the attachments.

Good find. I bought a new a year ago, couldn't find a used one at a decent price. They last forever, good luck and let's see some projects when you get done.
