AMC 20 Question

My brothers '86 CJ7 had a bearing go out (cage gone, rollers loose)in his model 20. They pulled the flange w/ axle "attached" to fix the bearing.
The problem is that after 4 hours of banging, penetrating oil, a torch, and a 25TON press, we can't get the [email protected] axle out of the flange. Are we completely retarded and missing something? Could the axle have "stripped" and spun/twisted in the flange, in essense locking it? The little bit of splines I see don't look deformed or twisted.
We sure could use some ideas on this one! Does anyone have any "tricks" for removing the flanges they could share? TIA!

Re: AMC 20 Question

Put it back in the press and put some a$$ on it. Use a piece of pipe on the handle to get farther away from it. When it goes look out. If you have to, leave it there with pressure on it overnight.

Can someone please bring me a hammer my 33's just ate my fender again. Damn i need more lift.

im sure it will come off if given the proper heat/tonnage.

Re: More AMC 20 Question

Also, My bro says this flange is/was brand new about 1+ year ago. He says that it was smooth and the splines(in the flange) were cut when he torqued the axle nut down. Is this right or has he put the wrong flange in? (I personally don't like m20 and don't know anything about wrenching on them)
He said this swap was done in Jan. when the temp was 20* outside. Is it possible the axle "shrank" from the cold, the splines were cut on a warm flange, and created the mother of all press fits? We lost access to the press this weekend, but will try more oil & BAP (big a$$ puller) over night to see if this helps.

I mentioned the one piece axles, but he doesn't understand what they'll do for him, other than make the 2 parts 1. Any info & experiences I can pass on to him?

Re: More AMC 20 Question

Those 2 pieces you are finding impossible to separate, well they will spin on each other at a very bad time, leaving you stranded. This is a semi-floating, not full-floating axle, once it spins, you are sunk. And those M20 break parts, they aren't cheap and they are hard to find, and chances are they may be damaged (ie: backing plate).

Re: More AMC 20 Question

The new hubs are smooth and the axle cuts into it during assembly. Some complain about the axles being weak but I've never had one break and never run anything less than a 304.

Re: More AMC 20 Question

I've never had my M20 spin a hub either and I have a 304 backed by the gearing of a T18a...though I have broken an axle shaft in there.
