info on 74 grand wagoneer axle?

Schools out so now , with the exception of work, I have time to work on my jeep. I found a 74 grand wagoneer being parted out. Is the 44 in the front going to have the wimpy 260 joints or the larger ones? Is it going to be open or closed knuckle? Also is it going to be the narrow track or wide or can it be either for this year? I ran a search but came up with some different opinions as to which year 44 to get. I'd appreciate it if anyone has any info 'cause I don't want to waste the 30 minutes driving in my 9 m.p.g Chevy powered Jeep with prices so high. Thanks.

a d44 from '74 will be open knuckle.. 6 lug.. and they only made wagoneer's or cherokee's then.. and that being the first year of the cherokee.. but it should be about 59" wide.. passenger side differential.. and will have the larger ujoins.. might also be a flat top knuckle version..

I know you guys keep saying the '74s have open knuckles, but, as I posted before, I came accross a '75 about 6 weeks ago that was closed knuckle & 5 bolt. The guy was positive it was a '75. Anyway - to be sure, I would ask who you are talking with if it's 5 bolt or 6 bolt - that should be (correct me if I'm wrong here guys) a giveaway as to the closed knuckle/U-joint thing.

Closed knuckle and 5 bolt will be a pre-74 dana 27.

Re: info on 74 grand wagoneer axle?

Just trying to make you aware of a few things, when I looked into buying a suppossed '75 wagoneer for parts - I asked about the axle on this board & did some checking - I was prepared to take a 65 mile trip to buy the wagoneer for $250 when a buddy of mine said "hey watch out for closed knuckle" I said - "well it's a '75 & it should be open knuckle, no problem" my husband called the guy the day before we were going to pick it up & asked him if it was closed knuckle & if it was 5 bolt - which it was. I was very surprised. But - I guess my point is - strange things happen in the world of Jeeps & ask as many questions as possible before you take a decent trip to go pick up a part.

If you want a chart on drivetrains for full-size jeeps - here is a link:

The ifsja.org website also has a message board that is good for posting wagoneer questions on it also.
