Another body question!

I have decided to use enamal paint as I think it would be a better decision because of the probability of seeing my hideous attempted bodywork.

I wasted a lot of time..
Almost EVERY part of my jeep with the exception with the inside of the windshield frame and dash have been sanded..
Some down to bare metal..and a lot of random places with paint on it.
I would just paint in now but I am afraid I will have a bunch of random high spots and it wont be smooth.
Will spraying primer help even it out? Some of the parts are kinda high.
I've got most paint off but the last color or two are a LOT harder than the other three.

Re: Another body question!

primer wont fill anything you can feel

maybe a skim coat of glazing putty

you really hsould feather all of hte edges in then glaze/sand/prime

Re: Another body question!

Joey,

There are special high build primers available that will fill small inperfections out on
the market. Two that I can think of right off the top of my head are: K200 made by
PPG and Ultimate 2K High Build made by MarHyde. I had used both will good results.
They both use a catalyst and can be reduced if needed, I have never used an
reducer with them. The K200 is a little pricery then the MarHdye stuff. To use them
you would spray 2-3 medium coats, let dry, and wetsand with 400 grit sandpaper.
This stuff is basically like a sprayable glazing putty that sands easy.
When it is first sprayed you will notice any little inperfection, but when sanded it will
remove them. I would also recommend a sealer over the primer before you apply your
paint.

Re: Another body question!

Joey,

What he means when he says to feather all of the edges is to sand them so
that they blend into the surrounding area next to them. You will want to do
that so that you won't see them after you paint this jeep.

Re: Another body question!

Well some of the imperfections seem kinda large?
I dont know..
There is a bunch of odd paint here and there..like little patches everywhere where other places are down to bare metal.
I'm not wanting to spend a lot of money on primers if possible...but I have a places that I couldn't get to and sand well..or places where the paint was "tougher than nails" or some of the places..and other places where there are little patches of putty/bondo.

How much does this primer cost?
After rereading this I kinda understand what you are saying.
So will it make the other random patches/layers of paint level with this? Will it be easily noticeable on the places where I left some paint?

Re: Another body question!

Joey,

Find somewhere that sells the Mar Hyde Ultimate 2K High build urethane primer-
last time that I bought some it was about $40-50 a gallon and $20-25 for a quart
of the catalyst.
Mix it as directed on the can - it should be about 4 parts primer to 1 part catalyst.
Spray about 3-4 medium coats on, let it sit overnight. Like I said before you will
notice alot of the inperfections when you look at it but when you sand it they will
disappear. It will level the other layers of paint. It is money that will be well spent.
Plus it sands alot easier then glazing putty does!
