NO OIL PRESURE! HELP!

I have an 87 Wrangler Laredo, 4.2 I6, 5 speed. 165k. I am having a problem with oil pressure. The problem started where I was reading no oil pressure on the guage. It was past 0 in the negitives. Since then I have replaced the sending unit, checked the guage etc. Still, it reads no oil pressure. When I connect the wire that comes out of the sending unit to the positive battery terminal, the guage jumps, so there isn't a problem with the wiring as far as I can tell. (Right?) I've tried grounding the sending unit manually, and the guage still won't move. I hooked up a mechanical guage, and its reading 50lbs of oil pressure - VERY healthy! So what is my problem? There is only supposed to be 1 wire coming out of the sending unit right? Does anyone have wiring diagrams for this...its not even in my service manual! Help. I've been battling this for over 2 weeks now so if anyone has any ideas I would be very happy to hear from them.
Thanks, Marty

Re: NO OIL PRESURE! HELP!

The following site says this info "only covers gauges and sending units used in the AMC Jeep CJs built from '72-'86, but some of this information will be useful for owners of other Jeeps." Thought it might help....

Why not just use the mechanical guage for good. Switching to mechanical guages was one of the best things I did for my Jeep.

Re: NO OIL PRESURE! HELP!

I want to keep my jeep as original as possible, and besides, then I have this broken guage in the middle of my dash and this additional guage that I have to mount. And it pisses me off that I can't get this thing to work.

Re: NO OIL PRESURE! HELP!

i did away with all my YJ gauges and went with mechanical. best thing i ever did. the yj gauges are marginal at best. you can stick a photo of a loved one in the hole, or a nascar sticker, or you could paint a needle where you would like the oil pressure to be..

I've seen mec gauges in one of my catalogs. that fit into the stock holes on most jeeps this may be exactly what you are loking for not only do you get your gauges working but you can make it look like there stock (some what)
