Lockright install in amc 20: c-clips?

Hi,
i have started installing my lockright in my '83 amc 20. i hav a few questions. so far i have removed the diff cover and drained the fluid. directions say that if it is a c-clip axle, that i dont need to pull the axle shafts. question is, does this axle have c-clips? if so, where are there? and how do i remove them?. do i really have to remove all the brake equipment to install? a breif simple run through of your installation would be greatly appreciated! thanks!

No C clips in an amc20

depending on your gear ratio you may or may not be able to get the cross pin out to install the side couplers.

youll probably have to remove ht ebrake stuff ot slide the axle shafts out far enough to get the side gears out

Re: Lockright install in amc 20: c-clips?

thanks ozark...
i have 3.54's for gears, and the retaining pin for the pinion shaft is accessible with the ring attached to the carrier. so i guess i can do the istall with the carrier in the housing.
are there any tricks to removing the axles? i bought the Jeep with moser 1 piece axles in it, so the chiltons and haynes write-ups are not too useful. i am assuming you need to take all the brake stuff off, and then remove the 4 bolts behind the brake shoes, and then the axle should slide out?

Re: Lockright install in amc 20: c-clips?

shouldn't have to pull all the brake parts,, just pull the brake lines from the slave cylinder and then take the 4 bolts out, backing plate and brakes should come off together. You don't need to pull the axles out. And you shouldn't have to take the e brake line off. With the 3.54 gears you only need to pull the axle out about 2" to get the spiders out and set the lockers in with the carrier in place.

you got it, the retaining plate with 4 bolts is what keeps it in there.

you might need to wack em p[retty good to dislodge them depending on how long they have been there.

an old trick that usually owrks for me is to re install the brak drum backwards, and use 3 lugnuts, just screwed on about half an inch, then you can use the brake drum as a psuedo slide hammer, of the several ive taken apart that has gotten all of the stubborn ones.

You should only have to pull one shaft also.
