Condensation in the engine??

Guys, this will sound silly, but I am getting some kind of condensation in the fill oil fill cap and fill tube. I never noticed it until I put a new cap on the oil fill hole...but it is driving me crazy because water should not be there. Any ideas on how to deal with this? It is not, coolant, and I have no reason to believe that i have coolant in the oil. It's definately some kind of condensation. It is an old engine with some blow-by, but not bad...

Short trips will do that...or a t-stat that won't close...or a plugged pcv system, and some other things that I can't recall.

Re: Condensation in the engine??

My brother's 258 does it bad! He thought he had a cracked block & tore the whole thing down, nothing. Eventually replaced the block, didn't change a thing.
I was thinking it was PCV related also at the time.

I'll check out the PCV...I never saw anything like it. I do make short trips, but I always hava and never noticed it before.

Re: Condensation in the engine??

My 258 seems to do it worse in the winter than the summer. After working on it forever and replacing all the above mentioned things............I gave up and I live with it.

I got the same thing when my pcv started to acted up but it collects in the dip stick not the filler cap. I've got the 90yj 258.

Re: Condensation in the engine??

That's how I discovered that my head gasket had blown. Lots of condensation on the dip stick, water+oil goo inside filler cap and in the blow by hose. Keep an eye on the coolant level for the next while just in case.

Re: Condensation in the engine??

that was also my 1st thought, (head gasket) i'd keep a good eye on my coolant level, if it's going down slowly but you can't find a leak, might be getting in the oil

Re: Condensation in the engine??

Normally water in the engine is associated with coolant and the blown head gasket theory, but I have been a jeep/shadetree mechanic long enough to be able to recognize those symptoms, and this is purely a case of some kind of condensation...I never noticed it when I lived in the South, but here in Monterey, CA the weather is MUCH cooler and that may have something to do with it. I dont think it is enough to hurt anything, I just dont like it...
