More 8.8\" rear end donor vehicle questions!

Alright, I gave the yard a call and I need some more info:
I told him I need a '96 or newer Explorer with disc brakes on the rear.

He asked me:
Does it need to have a V8 or V6 (do both of these come with 4.10 and 31 splines?)
Auto or standard tranny (does it matter?)?
Does it need to have standard or auto adjust suspension? (I have no idea what he's talking about?)
Can it be older than '96? ( I guess they didn't have disc brakes though? but did they still have 4.10 with 31 spline?)

Also, there's no problem with running a 4.10 in the rear and my stock 4.11111 D30 in the front right?

Everyone give their 2 cents with what they have found and maybe I can put them all together!
thanks,

Re: More 8.8\" rear end donor vehicle questions!

Big Ed,
get the 4x4 96 or newer explorer V8. Tranny doesn't matter. The suspension I would suspect that the standard would be cheaper and would be less "stuff" you would have to cut off. Don't settle for older. Get the disc brakes "upgrade". Yes you can run 4.10 in one axle and 4.11 in another. You have to worry if you go over 3 hundreths difference (4.10 & 4.13 would be ok but not any higher).

Re: More 8.8\" rear end donor vehicle questions!

This is some good info I came across on an explorer board:
"8.8 came in all explorers v6 and v8 manual and auto but 95 and up came with disc brakes there should be a tag that is 4L10 or just 410 or u could look at the door sticker in the door jam and look at the axle code which would be D2 for LS 4.10 but i can't remember what the open 4.10 code is but somebody else knows it i don't know maybe this helps alittle bit"
something else I found:
"The only other needed item is a u-joint yoke to mount to the 8.8s pinion flange. Spicer PN 2-2-1379. Not sure of cost, but I imagine it's not expensive. The 8.8 has the same snout length as the D35c (YJ) so the stock driveshaft is useable, but it is offset a little, so an SYE with CV shaft is preferred, but not necessary."
"MORE has done numerous 8.8 swaps and would probably be a good source of info on this swap. They sell a spring perch, shock mount and u-bolt kit for $105 for the YJ swap. http://www.mountainoffroad.com"

thanks for the response jun,
big ed

Re: More 8.8\" rear end donor vehicle questions!

Big Ed,
I got my dana spicer u-joint adapter thing from a machine shop who makes driveshafts. He gave it to me at his cost $19.85
I got my spring perches from Jeg's $14.00
I also got my shock mounts (universal kind) for $19.00
I ordered new brake soft lines to go from the caliper to the axle hard line from Advance auto parts--they were not very expensive either. I have not yet tried to get the u-bolts or u-bolt plates. Let me know if you find a cheap place to get those. I was going to get mine at the same machine shop I orderd the spicer part from. I have a guy who helped me do my V8 swap who is going to install the axle for $100 labor. Let me know if you run into any snags with anything (brakes, etc.) and I'll do the same for you.

Re: More 8.8\" rear end -- MA Source, $250.

OK guys, I picked up my axle this past weekend, it is safely in the back of my pickup truck.

Now I can tell you of my source.

Axle is $250, includes rotors, but not calipers. I got a 4.10, and they have another one, along with I think some 3.73's. La-Myers Used Auto Parts, Sutton, MA. 508-865-5231. Ask for Kevin.

Now to buy some more parts, and make some calls to get my perches welded on!!

Woohoo!!

Pete

Re: More 8.8\" rear end -- MA Source, $250.

Why no calipers? Just curious. Wonder if calipers from a 1990 Lincoln's Mark VII 8.8" rear will fit, those are a dime a dozen.
Where abouts is Sutton, Mass? How far from the Maine border? $250 seems pretty reasonable. Are you running a 4.11 up front?

Re: More 8.8\" rear end -- MA Source, $250.

Ed,

Don't know why it it sold without calipers - just the way that yard sells 'em I guess. ??

Sutton is just south of Worcester MA on Route 146. hmmm....from Maine border... 95 to 495 South... 290 East to 146 South.

I dunno, a few hours, anyway.

I think they ship, too. http://www.lamyers.com

Check car-part.com. If I recall correctly there was a 4.10 in Maine up be Scarborough for a while. http://www.scarboroauto.com still shows a 4.10

Good luck,
Pete

Re: More 8.8\" rear end -- MA Source, $250.

Well HELL!! Thanks Pete! That place is about 5 min from where I work and I have never heard of it! SOB, I can't believe it. I just called them up and they have one for $250, forgot to ask them if it came with calipers though.
He said it has the 4.10 and discs. does that mean it definitely has the 31 spline axles then?
wonder if it has e-brakes on it?

Re: More 8.8\" rear end -- MA Source, $250.

As I understand it, anything with the discs is 95/96+, and should be the one with the good axles, etc. Don't spend the $250 just based on me, by any means, find out for sure if you're concerned, but that's what I bought.

Mine has a lever on each backing plate that presses against the rotor - I think that's the ebrake.(?) Haven't really had much time to examine the axle, though, so I'm still not sure. I know the tag says "4 10"

Glad I could help,
Pete
