Crazy D44 waggie question (me again)

OK - well my beautiful deal when to pot when I found out (as was posted earlier by elusive) that the '75 waggie front axle is a closed knuckle, drum brake, 5 bolt axle (finally got the guy to go out & look) which is rather dissapointing & confusing. Anyway - my husband made me ask the following question:

Has anyone taken a '80s waggy front D44 with the drivers side drop & flipped it to make it a passender side drop & put in reverse cut gears, used it as a spring over full width? Is this possible?

(I'm bracing myself for the "ARE YOU NUTS" statements)
-Mel

Re: Crazy D44 waggie question (me again)

I think the housing woundnt properly oil the pinion and stuff, they are designed to sling oilinto a funnel shape that directs it to the pinion bearings.

other wise a great idea! and of course the knuckles would be upside down.

too much work, start with something orinted correctly, maybe cut down a Chevy front 44, the are SOA already, and you only need to shorten one side, shoudl also be plentiful and CHEAP ( IM cheap!)

What Ozark said. Also, reverse cut gears don't turn the opposite direction like many think. The rear axle would want to go forward and the front would want to go in reverse. You would have to find a way to make the front driveshaft spin the opposite direction.

Re: Crazy D44 waggie question (me again)

We can get a '74 3/4 ton chevy axle - it is full width right now - would we only have to cut one side & does anyone know how much would have to be cut to get to waggy width?

BTW - I guess the specialty high pinion diffs are specially designed to oil properly? We probably won't do this - but sure is interesting to think about it.

OH - I just read about the "opposite direction thing" - dual transmissions? How about a floating carpet. (Just kidding)

my front wag 44, from a 75 ( or 76) wagoneer measures 49 & 5/8 inches, thats the housing end to end, upper balljoints outside edge to outside edge. no knuckles or anything housing only!

the topmost parts maybe you can tell from this if Im lucky.

Ozark, What did you do for the spring perch on the punkin?

Is that a shortened housing?

What's the deal with moving your springs outside the frame, can't you adapt or grind the punkin to accept a spring perch?

Re: Crazy D44 waggie question (me again)

no its a stock length wag housing from 1975or1976 ( flat top knuckles)

I ground another flat spot in the housing parrallel to the original, as low as I could, since I dont want a buttload of lift, and its less leverage on the spring.

here are some more pic of the perch

Hey ozark,

Do you happen to have the messurements of the axle shafts themselves? I know a guy who has tons of spares from all different axles, but I need to know the sizes. Thanks

Ricochet,

Ive got them both, BUT they are in my greenhouse ( no green thumb Jeep storage) and its COLD out there.

if you can wait until Friday Night, or Sat afternoon, I can get you some measurements.

please email me so we can get straight whether you want end to end, or flange to flange or what.

IM already clean and warm for the night or I would go and do it right now.
