Engine woes

So the 258 in my '7 has been ill for some time. The large quantities of blowby in the air filter and smoke coming from the crankcase had me convinced that I most likely had a hole in one of my pistons. I took it to a reputable engine shop for a compression check, and they said that I was okay. They saw a loss of power in the number 5 cylinder, but it wasn't blown. The suggested that my issues were indicitave of a vacuum leak (unfortunately not from any of the hoses) and a valve problem. I'd like to get a few thousand more "reliable" miles out of this engine before swapping in a 4.0. Anyone have any reccomendations for me? How difficult is troubleshooting valve issues? I'm fairly confident in my mechanical abilities as a shadetree mechanic, but have never ventured to engine internals before. Thanks!
