Can any one tell me what year ('87-'95) the computer for the engine was either in the passanger compartment or on the firewall (Driver's side in the engine compartment). I would like to get a "new" harness for my wrangler. 4.0L fuel inj. thanks to all your replies. but maybe i should clearit up. I have a '87 YJ and want to put either a '94-'95 wireing harness in it. My current ECU is behind the glovebox and I want to retain it there (so there is no big hole in my fire wall).
I believe that all that were equipped with the 4.2L I-6 had the ECU in the dash or on the firewall. I have not worked on much other than CJ's. You might browse through a Haynes or Chiltons manual. You might find one at the auto parts store that someone else has torn the plastic off of and you can get a free quick peek.

My understanding is that you are all sort of right...
The engines computer (ECU) is mounted under the dash inside the Jeep behind the clovw box.
The Ignition control module (ICM) is mounted under the washer bottle on the drivers side engine compartment.
The ICM takes cues from the ECU to control the spark.
That's for the 4.2. I can only assume it's similar for the 4.0. Either way the actual computer ECU should be under the dash.
