D44 Question - Need help.

I have a CJ with a D44 from a 78 Scout. I need to get a bearing retainer or "backing plate". Am I able to get one from any D44? or only Scout D44's? or what? I was told that I can get one from the Jeep Dealer... Any help on this?

THANKS SO SO MUCH!

Re: D44 Question - Need help.

Not all backing plates are the same - they vary depending on the type of brakes used on the axle. for instance when i was putting together the waggy axles currently under my yj I needed a backing plate and tried 3 different ones (all for D44s) before I found the one that was right.

I would suggest that you try to source a used scout backing plate, that would be cheapest if you are keeping the other backing plate and the drums. If you aren't keeping or don't have any of the other brake parts, then you might be able to use a more common backing plate/drum/brakes assembly - I'm not 100% certain but I think the end caps on the axle are the same for all D44s.

The best way is to get the bill of materials number off the axle tube to the right of the differential cover. Take this to a dana/spicer dealer and they will get it right the first time.

Re: D44 Question - Need help.

If you need the retainer ring I got one for a 2000 tj with a dana 44 and it was right (much to the disgust of the skeptical parts guy : ) Take your old backing plate with you to the dealer and ask to see one for the above vehicle if the tag is no longer on the axle. I have the same year of scout axle and have had some luck using parts for a 75 cj-5 dana 44 rear.

Re: D44 Question - Need help.

Here is what I know, based on actual parts here in my garage, or vehicles parked in or near my garage. The Scout II Dana 44 rear axle brake backing plate is not like any of the Jeep Dana 44 brake backing plates I have. The list of Jeep Dana 44 rear brake packing plates I have include, 70 Wagoneer, 72 Wagoneer, 76 Cherokee, and 69 Jeepster.

Re: D44 Question - Need help.

So you are using a D44 plate from a 2000TJ? Hmmm. interesting. I will stop by the dealer today and see what they have. Thanks!

Re: D44 Question - Need help.

I meant the bearing retaining ring from the 2000 tj is the same. Not sure on the brake backing plate but I am using the 75 cj5 shoes, hardware, piston, and drum on the original scout plate.
