dumb question

Okay, i've only been into jeeps for a couple years and don't know a whole lot about differentials, but why is the D35 so weak, even with the upgrades? I bought the super 35 kit from superior axle which has one piece axles that are the same diameter and spline as a D44 and a detroit locker made specifically for this to fit the d35 ring gear. Both of these have warranties, i believe it was 5 years on the axles and 2 on the locker(not sure, but i'll look) So all that is left is the factory ring and pinion. Is this the weak link? Also, if I put in 4.56's or 4.88's, would that make it better on it? sorry, i know it's long, but hey, I'm tryin to learn.

Re: dumb question

The ring & pinion is definately one of the drawbacks to the 35, it is small. Putting 4.56 or 4.88 gears will make the pinion gear even smaller (easier to break off ) The Dana 35 is not a bad axle, just don't plan on going rockcrawling with 35" tires on it. I know alot of guys with XJ's that run 33" tires with no problems, but they are aware of the limitations of the axle.

Re: dumb question

The January issue of JP magazine had a decent article on improving the 35. Superior Axle & Gear also has a new truss for the 35 that looks interesting, info @ http://www.superioraxle.com
