I just got a 1985 cj7 with a blown 4 cyl and a 4 spd manual trany. That is all the info I know on it. How can I tell what transfer case and tranny are in it. As I am looking to put a 350 in it. Any and all help please.

Re: hepl

Re: hepl

If the tranny has a curved shifter it's a T-4, if it has a straight shifer it's a T-176. The T-176 is fine, no problems with a 350, a T-4 isn't up to handling the power. D300 transfer with both.

Re: hepl

If the tranny is stock, it is the T-4. The T-176 was not offered with the 4 cylinder. As JEEPN said, the T-4 is not up to the power of a 350 and I wouldn't even try to run it. The transfercase should be the D300.

Re: hepl

If you are running a 350 might just want to get a chevy tranny and t-case. If you just decided to swap in an engine and tranny then you have to get a $500 adapter to mate it to the d300, for that cost you could just get a really stong chevy tranny that bolts right up.
