Best Engine/Tranny/T-case set up?

I was a little board and started thinking about building my trail rig (still need cash and a trail jeep, but oh well) and trying to figure out what the best option would be. Most likely this would be going in an early YJ or CJ 5 or 7 so what do you guys think? Cheep and expensive ones would be cool. Here's some I've though of a 4.0 bored and stroked to a 4.9 supercharged and just built not sure what tranny would mate to it though the JU crowd would say nv4500/ atlass, Maybe a built 401 w/ a T-18 and D20 w/ a 3.15 low, Good old chevy 350 but I don't know chevy trannys or t-cases, maybe a ford but the tranny/ t-case question beats me. Anything else? this is an opinon post.

Re: Best Engine/Tranny/T-case set up?

On a budget: AMC 360 V8-cheap(and easier to find than 401), can build after install, tons of low end torque, solid, Edlebrock; T-18-great low range(6.32), cheaper than NV4500, no real need for 5th in trail jeep, solid, can be adapted from stock jeep parts(less cash); D300-good low range, can install 4.0 gears, can get 32 spline output if stock one breaks($), easy to find, can twin stick

Your crawl ratio with 35" tire(SOA?) and 4.56 R&P ratio would be:6.32*4.0*4.56=115. Not bad.

What's everybody running? Do you like it? Also how can you do a d300 to t-18 using stock parts?

Re: Best Engine/Tranny/T-case set up?

I'm using a Chevy 350 TBI to a dodge NV4500 to a Dana 300. Good strong combination. The TBI is the best part, but the 5th gear is nice to have with big tires and low gears. An atlas II with the 4.3:1 ratio would be the only thing better in a swb jeep imo. Granted a Diesel with it's torque would be amazing, or an automatic for the guys that don't like shifting gears would also work.

You can't mate a T-18 to a D300 without an adapter unless it a D300 from a square headlight scout. That would be a slick setup though, 360-T18-Scout D300. My husbands jeep in a 304-adapted NP435 - D20. He likes it, he's a Ford guy too, so he likes the Ford Tranny.

I am pretty happy with my combination.(401,T-18, Scout D 300) I may consider a lower gear in my 300 maybe 3.8??. Gotta break something first.

Re: Best Engine/Tranny/T-case set up?

Sorry, mistype there...meant to say junkyard parts(instead of stock jeep parts). Another option would to run the T-18 and a dual x-fer(divorced NP 203 w/ D20, check out the Cold Duck combo that Wild Horses 4x4 has for sale, 3/4 ton YJ has one he made as well).

That would be 6.32(T-18)*2.0(NP 203)*2.0(D20)* 4.56(R&P)=115 crawl ratio. Same as the Tera Low gear set, but with a mud running gear. Or you could go lower with a Tera Low set in the D20: 6.32*2.0*3.15*4.56=181 crawl ratio. Now that is low.

Have you considered an auto?

Re: Best Engine/Tranny/T-case set up?

How 'bout this then: Ford 302(get late model w/ FI out of Mustang) w/ C3 transmission(RAT model has 3.41 ratio) w/ Cold Duck(6.05 from 2 D20's). 3.41*6.05*4.56=94 Crawl Ratio with an automatic tranny. Get a Lower gear set of 4.86(listed at the end of the Cold Duck page) for the stock D20 and go even lower. For this you would probably need a longer wheelbase though. Can you say CJ6?
