where to find 8.8\" ford rearend?

Local junkyards are not all that good, and are expensive...where can I find an 8.8 for a wrangler swap?
and how much should a complete one with discs cost?
Dan

Re: where to find 8.8\" ford rearend?

I heard $400 is a decent deal for one. My local junkyard said they can get it for that. I saw one on ebay sitting at $200 but it was from a Thunderbird so I don't know if it would work the same. I know the Explorer works and that the following have an 8.8: Mustang, some Thunderbirds, Excursion, Expedition, Ranger but it's too narrow.

Did you see the article on the 8.8 swap? I'll see if I can find it.

Re: where to find 8.8\" ford rearend?

The Rangers with the 4.0 v-6 have 8.8's, so do Explorers, These axle from those two are almost exactly the same width as the stock Wrangler axle. The Explorer axle can also be found with discs, so that is a plus. Mazda b4000's also have 8.8's. Some expeditions came with 8.8's and some came with the semi-floating 10.25 axle, but both are from full sizes so they are quite a bit wider than a stock wrangler, and have a different wheel lug pattern. The Excursion is also too wide as well, and is a full floating ford 10.25 with a 8 on 6.5 lug pattern. Best bets for an easy swap is an 8.8 from a Ranger or explorer( These have the same lug pattern as a Wrangler). You might also be able to find a Dana 44 from a Cherokee or Comanche. Prices vary widely by area but don't pay more than about $400, and at that price it should be one from an explorer with discs and 4.10 gears.

The Rangers are 28 spline and do not have disk brakes. In the drum brake configuration you will be relying on the C clip to handle all of the axle shaft retention duties, and if the C clip does fail,.. then good bye wheel. The Explorers come with beefier 31 spline axle shafts, and disc brakes, which incorporate an outer brake backing plate and bearing retainer which assists in keeping the axle shafts in place. If you are gonna do it, I would only use a 95 or newer Explorer as the donor.

Re: where to find 8.8\" ford rearend?

So a 95 or newer explorer, all of them have disc brakes in the rear? Any special models? How do I know if it has the 4.10 gears? What's the easiest way to identify a 8.8" rear end? Do they have e-brakes?

Just trying to get any more info on this swap before I call the yard.
I didn't realize H8 is running this rear end, if it's working for him, it'll probably work for me!

Re: where to find 8.8\" ford rearend?

I got mine at a junkyard for $450 (delivered). That was from a 96 ford explorer 4x4. It has 31 splines, disc brakes, included the calipers, brake pads, e-brake cable, 3.73 gears and a posi. I sold the gears and posi for $100 to help pay for my 4.11 gears and detroit.

Re: where to find 8.8\" ford rearend?

hey jun, how much do you figure our D35's are worth with the 4.1111111's in it? I would think at least $300 or so?

did your 8.8 have any stamping saying the gear ratio it had? or did the yard just know?

Re: where to find 8.8\" ford rearend?

I've been asking $250 for my D35 with 4.11 and dana tracklock. Both the gears and posi are fairly new. The 8.8 did have a stamp on it with the gear ratio marked on it.

Re: where to find 8.8\" ford rearend?

where was the ratio stamped, on the left side of the tube, on the cover? That way I can tell the junk yard boys to check them out as the wrecks come in. Do you know the stamp ID codes for whether or not it has posi?
thanks,
big ed

Re: where to find 8.8\" ford rearend?

Big Ed,
It had a metal tag attached to the cover. I can't remember what it said exactly, but I'll look tonight and let you know.
