Stuck in 4WD

I can't get my YJ out of 4WD! No vacuum from green hose going to Axle Shift Motor.. . Constant vacuum (even in 2lo) from yellow hose. 4WD light on dash always on. Green hose not cracked or crimped (brand new harness, actually). I read 200+ posts today, but none with an identical problem. BTW, battery acid ate through the cables, and I was in water up to the fenders (with the engine running) for 15 minutes. Could this have had an effect? Did I ruin anything? Any ideas?

Re: Stuck in 4WD

I'm not sure this will work or not but try to run it in reverse for a quick run. My Grand sometimes gets "stuck" in 4 wheel drive. When I throw it in reverse and go about 20 feet (maybe twice) it seems to come out.

Re: Stuck in 4WD

try taking apart the housing were you vacume lines go into the axles. 4 bolts i believe. In there is a fork which slide over a sleeve. mostly it's hung up.
Make sure the fork moves freely as well as the sleeve.

hope this helps

Re: Stuck in 4WD

I tried backing up a few times - still in 4WD. I'll take apart the shift motor tonight. I'm also going to check all my fluids. I'm concerned I sucked water into a place where it should never be sucked. Thanks for the advice.

Re: Stuck in 4WD

You said that there is no vacuum in the green hose even when the t'case is in 2wd. From that, I think your transfercase mounted switch is not switching the vacuum signal back to the 2wd (green) hose.

My buddys hose came off on his cherokee..It sucked up a bunch of dirt.I think they had to rebuild something and it ended up costing him $40.00 at Harmon's Offroad

Re: Stuck in 4WD

If you need a diagram of how it is supposed to be set up, let me know. However, I'm not quite sure which hose should have vaccuum when it is in 4wd and 2wd.

Re: Stuck in 4WD

2WD is Green, and 4WD is Yellow. I printed-out your drawing last week beee240 - thanks! I'm worried about my transfer case now. A $40 fix is affordable; a $400 fix is not (at this time, anyway). I'll take a look at the shift motor, then drain and refill fluids (oil, tranny, transfer case, axles/diff's). I'll see what that does. BTW, NP-231, Dana 30 Front, Dana 35 rear, Peogeot Trans (ouch)

Re: Stuck in 4WD

Hi Joey. Details of your friends $40 fix? I'll pay handsomely (I do a lot of music and chocolate packaging)! Don't tell beee240 I would have done the same for him and his drawing...Bill
