How To Tell If A Catalytic Converter Is Bad???

I think mine might be bad.

Are there any tell tale signs? What are the life expectancys of these?

What happens when they go bad?

Thanks for any advice

Re: How To Tell If A Catalytic Converter Is Bad???

If you tap it and it rattles, or if you start it and it rattles, it's bad. Mine went bad @ 60,000 miles when it was 5 years old so the Jeep dealer that I bought it from used fixed it under warranty from the EPA. (That's another story.) I had a car that had a bad converter, and it plugged the exhaust and the car died. Go ahead and pop for one. Good Luck!

BM,

If you take it to a decent shop, that can to a differential check across it to tell if it's bad. I think they remove the O2 sensor and hook up a pressure gauge, then also chect at the end of the exhaust. The difference between the two is measured and will tell if it's clogged.

Re: How To Tell If A Catalytic Converter Is Bad???

The one on my old '90 YJ went bad and I knew what it was eventually. I would drive along and it would loose all power and struggle to run. It would eventually die and then after 15 minutes it would start and run fine This happend a few times and I had no idea what it was. Then it happend at night. As I sat along a deserted road wondering what to do, I noticed a red glow out the pasanger side. I looked under the Jeep and found the cat to be bright glowing red. That clenched it for me.

YA no power would be one to watch for. When I took my truck in and had the muffler upgraded to a class pack thay told me mine was on is way out thay could tell by the rattle I ran with it for 2 weeks when it had a melt down. she pluged up almost solid.

the only way to tell if they are bad is to look under your jeep, and if you see one, IT IS BAD!!! TEAR IT OFF!!!
