? Broken Speedo Cable

I was trying to straighten out the mess of wires under my dash and broke the inner part of the speedo cable. The metal piece that turns around and around. It broke about 3 feet past the speedo, near the connection.

I've been thinking of getting a new speedo anyway, the trip meter has never worked. Recommendations or ideas?

Re: ? Broken Speedo Cable

I paid more than I should have for a speedo cable from a Jeep dealership about six months ago. I broke the stem that goes into the speedo itself off. I found out a couple days later about a local speedo shop that would have fabbed a new cable for half the price if not for less. If you have a shop in your area, take the old cable to them and they will make one to match for a lot less than getting one from a dealer. Other than that, I'd say hit a bone yard in your area and see what you come up with.

I was thinking of upgrading to that digital speedo in the catalogs. It would be nice because you can program it for different wheel and gear setups. The only thing is that I don't know if I want that digital crap messing up the look of the dash.

You can buy a universal one from NAPA that you cut to length. Comes w/ directions and the "stake" tool. It's totally easy and costs under $15 last time I bought one.

Re: ? Broken Speedo Cable

If it is only the speedo cable that broke, then check with Quadra-tec , or similiar company for a new one. 15 bucks and you should be back in business.

Re: ? Broken Speedo Cable

Help section at Autozone has the metal inside cable for like 3-4 dollars and I didn't even have to cut it. Just put the little brass thing on the end and slid it back through the plastic housing.
