Push button starter switch?

On my 78 CJ-7 I've decided to leave the bad key cylinder in, and wire in a push button starter switch. The only problem is that I don't know how. I have already put a switch on the large red wire coming off the positive side of the solenoid. I presume that this wire goes to the fuse block because when I turn it off, everything shuts off too. Is there a better way to wire the on switch? Any advise is appreciated.

The starting wire is one of the small terminals on the solenoid, That red wire should be fine , if you used a good switch. If the switch get real hot, you need a bigger switch.

You could do it this way but I would tie off the column wiring. This way it will be wear it's supposed to be. Look for a large red wire on the column thats hot with the key on and not when off. If you decide to run off the fuse box, make sure you find a spot with enough amps (wire dia. behind the box).

Sorry I didn't explain better.

I already have a toggle switch to supply power from the positive side of the solenoid to the fuse block. That switch doesn't crank, its only an on switch. The ignition switch won't turn off, it will only go in the on and crank position. The toggle switch takes the place of the on switch. From there I need to wire in a push button switch to make it crank. Do I crank it and check the wires from the ignition switch to find the hot one?

Already read it, not much help. Like I said, I'm halfway there, I just need to figure out what wires makes it crank.

Muddog, you've got to have MINIMUM of three swtiches to do the job. The OEM ignition swtich will do the job of all three swtiches, plus remove any other high current load that's on. So, at minimum you've got to duplicate:

1. The first switch will apply voltage to the starter solenoid.
2. The second switch switches 12 volts to the coil.
3. The third swtich switches out the 8.7 volts from the load resistor or wire resitor.

So the question is, as you are going to leave the OEM key swtich in place is it functional to swtich the coil voltage from full to 8.7 volts?

I was trying to get rid of the oem switch and replace it with the other switches. Look at the diagram to see what I've done so far.

Tell me if this is close:

1. The small blue wire coming off the small post goes to the switch then supplies voltage to the solenoid.

2. The small red wire coming off the other small post goes back to the switch and then to the coil.

3. Now what about the other switch???

By the way, the switch thats in there now is simply a kill switch. It has nothing to do with the ignition.

That's the problem.. without multiple swtiches, or multiple swtiches built into one master swtich body you cannot do what you are trying to accomplish. In the diagram you've shown two contacts that have to be made, the red wire engages the solenoid... while the blue wire feeds the switcher circuit of the ignition module...

So here you are with one switch trying to accomplish multiple tasks... it just can't be done unless you leave the ignition circuitry always "live." Then that kill switch will come in mighty handy.
