fixing my starter

Help! My starter motor is on the fritz. When I turn the key it kicks over, but sometimes it won't engage the flywheel. I took it out and the teath on the starter gear were broken and rounded off. I bought a new gear to put in there, but now I can't figure out how to change it. I know that I need to get the starter apart and there looks like two bolts holding the cast metal portion onto the other half. I tried fitting a nut driver in there, but the hole was too small - I got a smaller nut driver which was too small for the bolt! Am I on the right track or is there an easier way?

Re: fixing my starter

you dont say what engine, but Ill assume its an AMC, the entire starter for an amc V8 is about $30 with a lifetime warrenty at my local stores.

that might be better than replaceing a gear that got stripped because the engageing mechanism has failed also.

Re: fixing my starter

You might want to just get a new starter, $30 at Autozone and with a lifetime replacement, so whenever this happens again just slap a new one in there.

Re: fixing my starter

I would go buy a new one, but I live 200 miles from the nearest Autozone and my parts dealer wants $50 bucks for one. Not only that I am trying to sell the Jeep. I got the gear for $20 so I am not out that much. I just called the parts dealer and he explained how to change it out - I guess you have to pull the whole armeture out - and it isn't that hard. Thanks for your help.
