Gear oil recommendations?

Any particular gear oil that you recommend over another?

Recently swapped in 4.56s and after break-in, need to replace the oil. Currently running Mystik 85W-140 and will probably stick with this same weight but it's $5/qt. Before I spend that $, just want to see what anyone else suggests.

Also, is a friction modifier necessary with factory Trac-Lok? Thanks. - Andy

It is the most expensive, but extremely good.

Re: Gear oil recommendations?

I run royal purple gear oil. Great stuff. It is pricey like 8 bucks a qt but you get what you pay for. My pinion seal used to leak until i put purple in. I guess the synthecic softened the seals.

I have put Mobil 1 Synthetic in for the last 6 years and have had no complaints. This includes duty in Extreme Cold (-65)

Re: Gear oil recommendations?

I buy my 80/90W at SAM'S Club.....20.00 for a 5 gallon bucket. I figure I change it so often and in so many things I can't afford anything else!
I think it's like most other things...change it often and you won't have any problems!

I also run Mobil-1, great stuff. And yes, the modifier is needed for the Trac-Lok.

Re: Gear oil recommendations?

I go for the econo size , it's never in there more than a year anyway, and when you're breaking stuff in the woods, You find yourself stufing some pretty nasty dirt down the axle tubes. No reason to get goofy about the oil under my conditions.
