Wrangler sportbar to windshield question...

I'm putting a rollbar from a newer YJ (the kind that offers back seat protection instead of sloping directly down to the fenders)in my CJ-7, and would like to use the sportbars that connect to the front windshield frame(since I have them), at least until I can afford a real full rollcage.
Anyway...How do they connect to the windshield frame on the YJ? Are there nuts welded to the inside of the windshield frame, or are they just drilled and tapped holes? I obviously don't have a way to weld nuts to the inside of the frame, so will drilled and tapped holes be strong enough to hold the bars?
Thanks,

Dan 84 CJ-7,Weber,HEI. 95 ZJ,V8. http://netnow.micron.net/~wdohrn/

Re: Wrangler sportbar to windshield question...

<font color=blue>I've only had those off once, and I'm at work so can't go look... but there is a flat triangular shaped connector that is bolted to the windshield. The cross-bars connect to that (If you don't have them, they must be 2 pieces) with drilled holes.... Mine are not welded on. If fact, I remember some plastic...

Don't buy roll bars until you see mine! I'm 4 or 5 months from releasing them... They'll be a lot less expensive than what's out there, and will blow your mind. I'm tying to get the patent now...

Re: Wrangler sportbar to windshield question...

what kind of price range are you talking? is that for a full cage or the front hoop? I'll probably be looking into a cage by that time, so I'm interested

Re: Wrangler sportbar to windshield question...

<font color=blue>Hey Jeeper131,

Our first product will be a variation of the "typical" roll bar... from the hoop, forward (YJ's and CJ's first).

We have the capability to make everything... Without giving too much away, its the type of product that people say: "why didn't I think of that"... However, there are some SERIOUS liabilities associated with safety equipment, so the cages are classified as "sports bars"... let me tell you liablity insurance is NOT cheap!

You guys won't sue, right?

If you're interested, I'll start forming interest lists, just email me at:

<font color=blue>Dan, I just took a gander at my forward rollbars...

There is a triangular shaped piece welded TO the bar, and two holes are cut into the piece... those holes connect directly to the windshield frame... No plastic, either....

Re: Wrangler sportbar to windshield question...

Hey Dan how much did you have to pay for that sport bar? Did it come with the seatbelts? I want to get one for my CJ7 also. I was in a CJ7 that rolled it had a '95 Wrangler bar with a welded front hoop and front frame tie-ins. That setup worked really well.

There are some special nuts that you can get that would probably work to attach the side bars to the windshield. They are called "plusnut" and are made by BF Goodrich. I got some with a rack that installed in the bed off my truck. I am not sure where you could get them but they work really well in sheet metal.

Good Luck
Tom

Re: Wrangler sportbar to windshield question...

The YJ windshield frame has a tapped plate on the inside that the front bars bolt to. The YJ frame has a slightly different profile where the bar bolts up. It also is reinforced along the sides (internally) for more support. If possible, it would be safer, IMO, to use the YJ windshield along with the new bar. Minor mods are needed to make it fit. Hope this helps!
