what to do about small rust?

I have some small spots of rust on the interior
body of the 84 CJ7 I bought recently. They are about
quarter sized. Wondering what advice people can
give me about these. Is it something I should worry
about, what is the easiest way for me to take care
of such rust? Thanks for the help.

Re: what to do about small rust?

you didnt say whether or not they went right through but if the dont i would suggest grinding them down as far as you can then treat them with with navel jelly ( it is the actual name ) when it dries prime it and paint it with some rustoleum very simple fix should only take an afternoon but definately pull the carpets and check the seat mounting and seatbelt mounting holes for rust stop it before it gets out of hand

jeep the first 4 wheel drive the only 4 wheel drive

You must attack the rust before it starts to attack your jeep..

Yep, treat it like is was a nasty virus or the plague and drastic action ...
If it were mine I'd pull everything out .... floor coverings, seats, even the roll bar ... kill the rust, prime and cover it with paint, undercoating, Rino, DuraBake or whatever...
If not, before you know it you will be able to see those spots from the other side!

Re: what to do about small rust?

yep yep yep- take care of the rust today. you will thank yourself three years from now. look at your frame about 2' before it curves up to clear the rear axle there is always some rust there. seat mounts, seat belt mounts, floor boards, rocker panels, REAR CORNERS (behind the lights at the seams), rear floor, and by the roll bar. good luck

Sold the CJ... Cant wait for the next time around!

chris
I would take a rapid strip disc by norton(3m makes the same thing if you don't like norton). Hook it up to a drill and watch the rust go. Make sure you get it all off. If it is pitted take a trip to the auto store and find a product by sem called no rust and apply that. make sure to feather out the spot using finer and finer sandpaper stop at around 400 to 600 grit automotive quality. Then take some type of etching or zinc primer to help prevent rust and then spray the color of your choice over that. also clean things up in between steps with a prep cleaner like wax and grease remover or something like that

hope this helps

Re: what to do about small rust?

Fix it now now now! I wish we had "problems" like quarter sized rust anywhere in this state (MN). I swear the only thing holding the body to the frame was the steering column and the wiring harness! I didn't even unbolt it from the frame, just used my Hi-Lift and a 2x4 on the rocker pannel.I had to replace mine with a 'glass body...don't let yours get anywhere near this far!
