I had a 86' CJ-7 and got rid of it a while ago. I am in the market to buy another, but this time I would like a diesel powerplant. Anyone done this, or seen it done? Also, what were the best years in respect to tranny, axels, and transfer case etc. Any help would be great.

Re: Diesel

CJ5's had a Perkins diesel option, years ago. I am not aware of any domestic CJ7 Diesels. I would bet that some were built for export, but I think finding one would be pretty difficult. I never kept that good of track of the CJ7's so I could be wrong. Good luck.

Re: Diesel

When Jeepchick gets her CJ I'm thinking a diesel powerplant woldn't be a bad Idea. But I wonder what impact swapping in a diesel would have on getting emissions inspections???

Re: Diesel

Some place out in Texas is putting the 4 cyl Cummings I4 in CJ's. Man that would be a tough Jeep with a Clark(you should probably find a Clark with a Cummings bolt pattern) and a NP205 x-fer. Maybe even double it with a divorced NP203 reduction box. Hmmmmm.

Re: Diesel

I was thinking about the same thing for my scrambler, I dont know much about diesels though. This should make for an interesting topic.

Re: Diesel

I was thinking about putting the 4-cyl cummins in my jeep but I heard it would be to heavy. How much do they weigh? What about the 6.2 or 6.5? I think DEISELYJ has a 6.5 TD in his YJ.

Re: Diesel

I want a Diesel powered Jeep!
I think that they would be perfect, Lots of torque, good fuel economy, emissions exempt in Md., more water proof than gas engine and they run forever. The only draw back I see is their fuel is prone to gelling in cold temps.
Someone told me that they made Diesel powered Scouts?
When my YJ needs a new power plant thats what I want Diesel Power

Re: Diesel

I just finished swapping a Cummins 5.9L TD out of a Dodge Ram into my M-715. I love it, 20 MPG out of a 1-1/2 ton truck with a camper in the back and plenty of towing power when the CJ is on the trailer. I have considered swapping the 5.9L into my CJ, but it would be overkill in the torque department, and the 5.9L weighs roughly 950-1000 lbs. It is also about 3" to long for the CJ engine compartment. The 3.9L 4cyl Cummins is the one I have seen in the rock buggys and have heard of people swapping into Jeeps. It should weigh in somewhere around 600 lbs and fits the engine compartment. If I ever stumble across one I'll have a really well built Chevy small block for sale!
