Front axle-shaft end play

I'm trying to pin down an annoying sound under the front of my CJ (who isn't). In doing so, I noticed that the passenger side axle-shaft in the D30 had about 3/16" of play side-to-side. I can grab the u-joint in the steering knuckle and move the shafts back and forth (no play at the joint, just the shafts). Is this normal, or is it time for fixing?

Maybe TTT means to the top?
Either way, there should be some play, 3/16 sounds fine to me. It really is an issue with your hub. Just make sure the c clip on the end of the shaft in the hub hasn't come off.

I bet pigpen is right. The c-clip on the end of the stub shaft probably came off or just isn't there. I don't know that this would cause any noises though.
