Steering Help!!!

I have picked up some slop in my steering. It started when I could feel bumps in the wheel when driving, and now I can grasp the wheel and move it approx. 1/4"! The u-joints on the shaft seem to be in good shape, but when I grasp the steering shaft midway I can get this same play (approx 1/4")
What should I look for or do to fix this? It doesn't seem safe, should I stop driving it altogether?

Thanks!

Re: Steering Help!!!

What direction is the steering wheel moving, in & out or up & down? Check the clamps on the slip joints and make sure that they're tight. Also check the input shaft on the steering box, does that move also? Steering box could be getting worn. Mine moves in & out a little, but not a 1/4". I'd find out what's causing the movement before you drive it very much.

Re: Steering Help!!!

The wheel moves up and down, not in and out. I checked all of the pinch bolts as well as the steering wheel nut itself.

There is no movement at the box itself.

Re: Steering Help!!!

I'm assuming that the shaft is moving inside of the column. Sounds like the bearings went south on you. I've never had one apart, so I don't know how hard they are to replace.
