replacing amc v8 oil pump gears

i'm replacing my oilpump gears in my 1980 amc 360,is there anything to shim or anything or do i just slap them in and put the cover back on?tia

WHOAAAAAAA!!!
I need to do several things first.
1) If you haven't taken the cover off yet you may be in for a surprise. I'm assuming that your replaceming the gears due to low oil pressure? Your cover may be scraped up from the old gears and dirt. You will need to have the cover machined perfectly flat.
2) Check to ensure the proper clearance between the gears and the housing cover. I believe it's .001-.003 but somebody else on this board will anser that better then I. Thats the reasons for the shims.
3) The housing must be packed with petroleum jelly, not grease, oil or anything else. This is needed to prime the pump and ensure it will suck the oil.
AMC V8's are notorious for low oil pressure due to the terrible design of the oiling system. You will want to get it correct the first time.

In addition to pigpen's post, make absolutely sure you get a good seal on the cover gasket. Mine would suck more air than oil. Also, the easiest way I have found to prime the pump is to use an old dist. shaft ground down to fit in a drill. Then you just run the pump with the drill before you drop the dist. in. That way you also pre-lube the motor. You can also use an old screwdriver but it doesn't fit as well due to the lack of a round section that fits over the drive gear.

CJDave's right the that shop will do better tha you and I and if you put alot of money into your engine it's worth the cost.
However here are the clearances if you want to do it yourself:
Gear end clearance .002-.006 in
Gear to body clearance .0005 to .0025 in

thanx alot guys;how do i measure gear end clearance? my haynes says the gears stick out past the housing and to measure how far they stick out,that seems wrong???(page 2D-6 of the cj manual)tia

Yes, the gears stick out, just place the cover on the gears, without the gasket, and measure the clearance beween the cover and the housing. Sutract the gasket thickness and you have your end clearance. Tighten up the clearance by removing metal from the timing cover. Add clearance by removing metal from the gears or use a thicker gasket. There are no shims involved here. The best sealer I have found for the gasket is to soak the gasket paper with locktite. Don't overtighten the bolts as the cover is easily warped. If you have one of the junk prestolite distributors left over from an update, grind off the drive gear teeth and remove the reluctor and weights on top to make a great preoiler.
