More Questions for the 258 guru\'s

I am in the process of re-building the top end of my 258, I have a carter carb. from an older CJ without the stepper motor on the rear. My question is "can I use this carb and get rid of all the miles of vacuum hose and other crap. My Jeep is mainly for trail use, so inspection won't be a problem. Also are there any electronics I should worry about, IE: stuff that controled the stepper motor, sensors or anything like that. Thanks for any help.

On your '86, the the computer controls the stepper motor by reading the O2 sensor. It is also tied into the ignition. If the knock sensor "hears" the engine knocking it will try to adjust the ignition. You can by-pass the computer all together by replacing the carb and modifing the ignition. This link will show you how to do that:

Then you can remove the rat nest of vac lines. I would recommend marking and saving everything, "just in case". Good luck!

Re: More Questions for the 258 guru\'s

I know the Nutter bypass will take the stepper motor out of the loop, but I will be using a carb with no stepper motor at all, carter from a early CJ. I assume a weber carb has no stepper motor, so what do the guys with these carbs do to eliminate the computer? The Nutter bypass also? I am also looking at getting rid of the o2 sensor with a hedder. I want to get back to a simple engine bay not all of these wires and hoses and crap that makes fixes on the trail a real pain.

hey there.. not sure about that carter.. but what i did was a holley 500 2bbl on a offenhauser intake.. then ran a dual points mallory dist. and it worked awesome.. i took the the computer out, the ignition control mod out.. and all the vacuum lines.. and most of the electrical lines out.. i had like 5 wires in there in 2 vac. lines.. was very KISS!!!! i still have the mallory dist. and could part with it. just let me know.
